Abstract
Purpose: The study is attempted to provide the basic data for spiritual nursing for the elderly patients, through finding out the factors influencing on the elderly patients' spiritual needs and spiritual well-being.

Methods: The data were collected from July 15 to September 15, 2010. The subjects were 145 elderly inpatients, who were in hospitalized in a general hospital. The instrument for this study was the scale for Spiritual Well-being(20 items), which was developed by Paloutzian & Elison(1982), translated by Choi, Sang-Soon(1990), revised by Kang, Jung-Ho (1996), and a scale for spiritual needs(30 items), which was developed by Kim, TaeHee(1986), adapting the three areas suggested by Fish & Shelly(1978). The collected data were analysed by t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, with SPSS/ win 17.0 PC.

Results: Of the total 150 scores, the score for the subject's spiritual needs indicated an average of 101.65(average score 3.39). Of the total 80 scores, the scores for the subject's spiritual well-being represented an average of 49.03(average score 2.45). The interrelation between spiritual need and spiritual well-being has indicated statistically a significant true correlation (r=.714, p<.001). The differences of spiritual needs according to the general characteristics showed significantly different aspects by gender, education, religion, religious practice and influence of religion. The differences of spiritual well-being according to the general characteristics showed significantly different aspects by education, religion, religious practice, influence of religion, satisfaction of economic condition and life satisfaction.

Conclusions: The findings of this study has revealed that the spiritual needs and the spiritual well-being of the elderly patients were found to be above the level of mid-line, and showed true correlation between the two variables. Consequently, the clinical nurses are called on to recognize the needs for the spiritual aspects of the elderly patients, and with physical care, provide them with spiritual care fulfilling their spiritual needs, to promote their spiritual well-being. Especially, since the religion serves as a major factor affecting the spiritual needs and spiritual well-being of the patients, it is needed to consider the religious activity of the patients and to build a system to cooperate with clinical pastoral ministers which can help the patients to maintain higher status of spiritual well-being.
